Graveyard Keeper 2 Beginner Guide — Launch Day First Steps

Graveyard Keeper 2 (out September 22, 2026) puts you back in charge of a medieval cemetery: receive corpses, prepare them, bury them — and quietly squeeze every coin out of the process. This guide covers your first days, based on official information about the sequel plus the mechanics that carried over from Graveyard Keeper 1. Anything sequel-specific gets verified in-game during launch week and updated here daily.

Before you launch: three things worth knowing

Section titled “Before you launch: three things worth knowing”
  1. The loop is the same. Bodies arrive, you process them, quality in = quality out. Almost every system hangs off this loop.
  2. Time is your real resource. Energy limits what you can do each day. Planning tomorrow’s actions before sleeping is the single highest-skill habit in this series.
  3. The sequel adds town restoration and automation at scale. The Steam page promises restoring the town, automating production, and leading an undead workforce — expect the mid-game to be about building pipelines, not just graves.

Exact starting steps will be confirmed within hours of release, but based on the series’ proven opening, your first in-game days should look like this:

  1. Follow the intro quest chain. The firstNPC conversations double as the tutorial. In GK1 skipping them cost players weeks of confusion about burial certificates — don’t repeat that.
  2. Fix the minimum, not the maximum. Upgrade only what the story asks first. Every spare coin goes toward processing capacity, not decoration.
  3. Meet the corpse. Your first body introduces the core decision of the whole game: bury it properly, or extract value first. Learning the autopsy/preparation flow early unlocks both money and graveyard rating.
  4. Set up a sustainable early route. Basic graves + steady income + short days near home beats one big optimal day followed by starvation.

The series’ central mechanic — and almost certainly GK2’s too — is that a corpse is inventory, not a person:

  • Bury it as-is: fastest, low reward, fine for your first days.
  • Prepare it first: remove/upgrade parts to raise corpse quality, which raises the maximum graveyard rating the burial can produce.
  • Process it entirely: the darkly profitable route the series is famous for. Full details live in the money guide.

The rule of thumb that survives every patch of GK1: don’t bury value you haven’t extracted yet, and don’t extract value you can’t afford the time for yet. Early game, time is tighter than money.

Church services and progression gates demand a graveyard rating, which comes from:

  • Grave quality — better headstones and fences on higher-quality corpses.
  • Decoration — flowers, lighting and beautification around the plot.
  • Cleanliness — the game punishes letting the place rot.

A common rookie mistake is stacking decorations on low-quality graves. Rating maths (in GK1, and very likely GK2) rewards matching grave quality and decoration investment.

What to spend your first technology points on

Section titled “What to spend your first technology points on”

Technology trees are where sim games live or die. The GK1-proven priority — expect GK2’s tree to be reorganized, but the logic holds:

  1. Anything that saves walking time or automates hauling.
  2. Corpse processing tier one (autopsy/preparation basics).
  3. Farming and food — energy management is the real early bottleneck.
  4. Everything else later; pretty upgrades can wait.

Rookie mistakes that cost weeks (GK1-proven)

  • Ignoring the day/energy economy and grinding one giant day instead of steady progress.
  • Burying corpses before extracting value, then needing to dig them back up.
  • Upgrading the church before the graveyard (or vice versa) and getting stuck at a progression gate.
  • Hoarding early items “in case” — storage pressure kills early momentum.
  • Not keeping a small cash buffer for quest-related purchases.
  • Money-Making Guide — the profitable routes, from burials to full corpse processing.
